The easy going resort of Avlaki, perched on the North east Coast of the island, is the perfect choice for a relaxing holiday, with good food at its beachside tavernas and a laid-back atmosphere. The resort has a picturesque pebble beach, ideal for sunbathing and swimming, or you can venture a couple of minutes' drive around the headland to the next bay, Coyevinas. This beach is also pebbly and has limited facilities, but is still great for swimming, sunbathing and a homemade picnic!
One big advantage of Avlaki's beaches may not be obvious at first. Golden sand is lovely to look at, but let’s face it, it gets everywhere! Avlaki and neighbouring Coyevnias Beach are covered in pebbles and course shingle, which is easy to walk on but does not get in your food, hair or clothes. If you prefer sand, there is a 500-yard-long unspoilt stretch of the stuff at Kalamaki not far away, and a little farther west you will find the busier delights of St. Spyridon Beach. Either of these will keep your bucket and spade brigade happy for hours, and the sand gently shelves into the sea so they are perfect for paddling and swimming. From Avlaki and Coyevninas beaches you get a clear view across the narrow strait to the gaunt, mysterious mountains of Albania.
