Sporting Activities In Costa Del Sol

There is no shortage of sports and leisure activities on the Costa del Sol.

On the coast, there is a wide choice of water sports centres offering boating, fishing trips, scuba diving, jet skiing, windsurfing and water-skiing.

All resorts have well equipped gymnasiums and leisure centres where daily membership is available and with all year round good weather there are many fine tennis clubs to choose from.

Horse riding is widely available too, and for family fun there are superb water parks and beach clubs with karting and beachside activities such as volleyball and football.

Adventura Water Sports SAILING, DIVING OR WINDSURFING Adventura Nerja is one of the leading outdoor activity centres in Andalucia and can be found at the easterly end of Playa Burriana. Fishing The Mediterranean shorelines are ideal for fishing. From July to September swordfish are found off the coasts of Almería, Granada and Málaga. Fishing in the local rivers and dams is also a popular sport, where trout, pike and black bass are found, as well as members of the ciprinidae family, barbel and carp.

The Club Nautique Nerja diving centre has some of the best dive sites in southern Spain on its doorstep. The sea is generally clear, non-tidal, and temperate, with a variety of marine life. The club offers BSAC and PADI dive courses which are available in an informal, relaxed, and friendly atmosphere.

Snorkelling The Buceo Costa Nerja dive centre offers guided snorkelling trips. Their PADI Discover Snorkelling program is an experience, not a course. It's a supervised snorkelling tour for fun. There is no certification requirement and no minimum age, so the experience is open to the whole family. The only requirement is that participants are able to swim.

Horse Riding Without doubt the best way to explore the Nerja region is on horse back. Lew Hoad Tennis Club This fine tennis club set in 30,000 sq mts of spectacular botanical gardens, was founded by the late Australian Wimbledon champion Lew Hoad.

It is located off the Fuengirola to Mijas road and as well as 8 superb plexicushion courts, several floodlit, there is a fine restaurant called ‘Cascades, a comfortable terrace bar, swimming pool, recently refurbished gymnasium, hair and beauty salon, and boutique.

There are regular tournaments open to visitors, twice weekly doubles and twice weekly mix ins. Coaching is available and best book courts in advance.

Route 66 Gym and Tennis Route 66 is a popular gymnasium and leisure centre, incorporating tennis courts, swimming pool and the excellent Paco’s Restaurant.

Located on the Fuengirola to Mijas road, almost opposite the Esso station, there is a superb well-equipped gym, sauna, fitness classes including aerobics and spinning, 5 courts and outdoor pool.

There is daily and weekly membership available at this friendly club. The restaurant serves a good choice of food, does a special Sunday lunch menu and has live music most evenings. Tel 952 461648.
Chicken Shack The Chicken Shack, located in Mijas Costa, on the slip road off the N340, just east of La Cala is a popular live entertainment venue aimed at the younger end of the market, with live music, a restaurant and barbecue and attractive terrace bar overlooking the lovely beach. There are sun beds for hire and a wide range of water sports activities to enjoy such as Jet ski and water skiing

Splash Watersports This company run a multitude of water sport activities from their centre at the pretty marina of Cabopino located just west of Calahonda off the N340 coast road.

Water skiing, sausage and ringo rides, wakeboarding, Jet ski and belly-board hire, and scuba diving are all available, as are fishing trips in local waters and special 2 ½ hour trips aboard ‘Splash l’ the 50 ft trimara yacht where you can watch for dolphins, whales and even flying fish.

El Casco Tennis Located at the El Rosario exit, km 188 of the N340 coast road, 5 miles east of Marbella, the El Casco Tennis Club offers all year round play on six clay and four hard courts with a weekly doubles tournament played on Sunday afternoons. Also Padel tennis courts, restaurant and bar.

Ballooning For something really exciting and different why not try ballooning? The historical inland town of Ronda is home to a company who organize pleasure trips and also run a balloon flying school.

Four passengers at a time are taken on the trip of their life up over the Sierra for between 1 – 1 ½ hours, flying silently with the wind over the picturesque white villages nestling below and on a clear day taking in the distant views of Gibraltar and the Rif Mountains of Morocco. Costa del Sol Equestrian Centre This fine equestrian centre is located at the km 159 exit from the N340, 3 miles east of Estepona in the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja. On offer are excursions on horseback, carriage driving and riding lessons, a popular pony club, dressage, competitions and training for both riders and horses. Original choreography and traditional Andalucian music turn the shows into an unforgettable experience, with pure Andalucian horses performing cabriolas, levadas, piruetas and other exciting movements. Sotogrande Marina The first important leisure harbour on entering the Mediterranean is Sotogrande which is situated on the estuary of the River Guadiaro and there is a protected marshland on the west bank of the estuary at the mouth of the river which is of particular interest to bird watchers.

For those thinking of taking a boat into the harbour the entrance width is 260 feet with a depth of 16 feet. Once inside this picturesque marina surrounded by up market and extremely stylish apartment blocks, you will see some impressive craft moored and there are many fine restaurants, shops and bars where you can relax and watch the world go by.
Cable Ski The cable ski system pulls skiers around the lake and each trip around the lake lasts about a minute. The cable can be set at a speed to suit individual ability, i.e. slow for children and beginners and faster for expert skier. Here at Cable Ski Marbella there is a café, restaurant, sun loungers and swimming pool plus a ski shop – an ideal place for a day out.
