Local markets and shopping

There is a good number of shops less than a mile away from Villa Caleta Heights. The Atlantico Shopping Centre with a bowling alley and plenty of shops is not far away. You can also enjoy the market on Saturday mornings from 9:00 to 13:00 where you can find all kinds of crafts and fashion.

Bars and restaurants

There are plenty of places to eat and drink just a short drive away from Villa Caleta Heights. You'll be spoilt for choice with restaurants offering Mexican, Italian, Portuguese, Indian, Chinese and, of course, Canarian cuisine. In the Atlantico Shopping Centre you can also find a few restaurants.

Beaches

The beach of Caleta de Fuste is the closest one to Villa Caleta Heights. It is a wide, sheltered and sandy man-made beach with lots of facilities including a pedestrian walkway, showers and toilets, a playground, beach bars, terraces, restaurants, sun loungers and parasols. The Atlantico Shopping Centre is next to the beach and is great if you want to combine sunbathing with some retail therapy.

Family fun

In front of the Hotel Elba Sara is a small artificial sea inlet with mullet fish which the children can feed with bread. The mini train is a good way to explore the resort, or visit Chipmunk Mountain, close to Caleta de Fuste, where you can feed these little creatures.

Places of interest

The Salt Museum is very close to Caleta de Fuste, you can even walk there and it would take you around an hour. Alternatively, Castillo de San Buenaventura is in the harbour area and was built to protect the area from pirate attacks and is well worth a visit. There is a replica of this castle at the entrance to Caleta de Fuste.

Around 30 minutes' drive away, you'll find the traditional village of Betancuria. This beautiful village has white low-rise stone houses with black volcanic stone trims, neat pockets of palm trees and views to the mountains. Or why not to visit the Cheese Museum in Majorero, 20 minutes by car? It is not just a museum about making goats' cheese but also has information about the history and formation of the island. You can even try your hand at milking a pretend goat!

Golf

Fuerteventura Golf Club is located in Caleta de Fuste and is the first 18-hole golf course on the island. You can play golf all year long surrounded by lakes, palm trees and beautiful greenery. Another option is the Golf Salinas de Antigua just outside Caleta de Fuste featuring countless hills, bunkers and desert areas, which are really attractive and endearing. All these elements pose endless possibilities, approaches, solutions and strategies of play.

Other activities

A unique experience in Caleta de Fuste is swimming with the sea lions at Ocean Explorer. You can also try submarine and endless water sports activities on the main beach. There are also hiking trails around Caleta de Fuste but for a striking scenery head to the south of the island.

Activities and things to do
Activity
Sand Sculpting
The Sandman is located on the main beach in Caleta de Fuste, 28 miles south of Corralejo. You can book lessons directly with the Sandman on the beach and try your hand at creating your own sand sculptures.

Activity
Watersports
The strong surf around some parts of the island make Fuerteventura one of the best spots in the world for surfing. The reliable winds and a variety of water conditions mean wind and kite surfers have all they need to enjoy these activities.

There is surf to suit all standards of surfer from the novice to the most experienced and adventurous surfer. Lessons are available for any of the disciplines at various centres around the island.

Various watersport schools can be found throughout Corralejo and on Flag Beach, all of which offer instruction, sporting equipment, wetsuits and transport for body boarding, sand boarding and surfing. Ask about their clubs for children. Schools are also available in Caleta de Fuste at the watersports area in the harbour beach.
Activity
Antigua Village
Built in the 18th century, Antigua is one of the oldest villages on the island.
The present population of Antigua is around 3000 and the total area is 250 sq.km.

The picturesque church of Cruz de los Caldos, that dominates the town, was built in 1785 and stands amongst well kept trees and shrubbery. The church is usually open to the general public in the mornings and sometimes during the afternoons. Next to the church is the beautiful village square which is filled with flowers all year round.

Antigua also has a fully restored windmill which is now a cultural centre and a popular tourist attraction. Inside is a craft shop selling local handicraft and art.

Despite being a fairly sleepy village, Antigua has a few social facilities for the local people such as a school, library, post office and a clinic. The church hall is used for a general meeting point.

Activity
Puerto Del Rosario
The capital of Fuerteventura since 1860 Puerto Del Rosario is just 6 km from the airport and has a population of around 18,000.

Once called Puerto de Cabras (goat harbour) the town developed into an important port during the 19th century after taking the capital of the island from Betancuria.

The church in the centre of 'Puerto' is dedicated to the patron saint 'Virgin del Rosario' and it wasn't until 1956 that the town was given the more pleasant name of Puerto Del Rosario (port of the rosary).

Puerto is more of an industrial area and isn't really geared up for tourism. Until recently it wasn't that attractive, but now the main street has been finished off, many of the roads resurfaced and the harbor promenade has been rebuilt with many grassed areas being constructed. And regularly cruise liners are seen docking for the day...

The harbour area is the oldest part of town and it is from here you can find all of the small alleys lined with old Canarian style houses.

There is one place worth a visit and that's the home of the former exile poet Miguel de Unamuno which is now a museum.

There is also a culture centre (Casa de la Cultura) where exhibitions, plays and concerts are held.

Puerto has improved very much over recent years. Spreading inland are more and more excellent shops and a few years back industrial estates have been introduced offering 'Cash 'n' Carry' warehouses giving residents more choice at better prices.
Drop by the Las Rotondas Shopping centre where a variety of shops await you.
Activity
Betancuria
Fuerteventura's former capital Betancuria lies in a picturesque valley next to a dried up stream which flowed up until the 16th century. Founded in 1405 by the Norman conqueror Jean de Bethencourt (hence the name), Betancuria has a great deal of history behind it. The reason for its location was to protect the capital from pirate attacks, although in 1593 the pirate Jaban penetrated the village and reduced everything, including the Santa Maria church, to a pile of rubble and ash. The church was not rebuilt until 1691.

Betancuria was capital for quite some time until the local people started moving away from the town due to lack of arable land. In 1834, Betancuria bowed down and handed the honor over to La Oliva (who then handed over to Puerto de Cabras known today as Puerto Del Rosario).

The Centro Insular de Artesania, next to the museum, documents traditional arts and crafts - if you want to see some local handicraft this is the place to come! Make a visit to the Casa Santa Maria where you can watch local artists at work and even purchase some of the hand made products from the quaint local shop.
