Location features

Location details

Villa Vistamar is located in the popular Balearic resort of Calan Porter, a purpose built holiday resort overlooking the spectacular sandy bay. The villa is a mere 10 minute walk from Calan Porter centre and all its amenities, but the main attraction of the resort is the deep, sandy cove bay, surrounded by dramatic cliffs. The bay is backed by marsh land, home to a variety of birds, and has something to offer all the family.

Calan Porter's idyllic large, sandy beach is lined with cafes where you can take a break from the sun and enjoy a cool drink overlooking the bay towards the open sea. Both sun beds and parasols are available to hire. Although not essential, for anyone who does decide to hire a car and see more of the island, almost all of the resorts have fantastic sandy beaches and can be accessed in no more than an hours' drive.

Shops and restaurants

With the resort centre offering a variety of small shops selling gifts and souvenirs, supermarkets, bars, coffee shops and eateries, you will be spoilt for choice for places to browse and eat in the centre of this much-loved resort! There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose from and most of the supermarkets and mini markets will deliver to the villa if you wish.

Family fun

The island is popular with families having clear shallow water on the beaches and there are also several childrens play areas dotted throughout the town.

Places of interest

Aside from its fabulous sandy beach, Calan Porter is also known as being home to the famous Caves of Xoroi. The caves are a popular tourist attraction by day, located in the cliffs by the side of the beach overlooking the open sea. By night, the caves transform into a colourful disco with an exterior waterside bar.

The islands capital of Mahon is well worth a visit with a wealth of chic shops and boutiques, cafes and restaurants. The harbour area is lined with a never ending choice of eateries and luxury yachts - great for people watching! Or browse one of the museums or explore the architecture.
You can catch the local bus from Calan Porter to Mahon.

Activities and things to do
Caves of Xoroi, Calan Porter
The Caves of Xoroi in Calan Porter are not to be missed and boast a fantastic panoramic view out to sea! By day, the caves are a popular tourist attraction with a cafe and gift shop. By night the caves transform into a lively disco with a bar and occassionally live music, where you can enjoy an evening cocktail as you watch the sun set over the sea.

Monte Toro
El Toro, at 360 metres above sea level, is the highest peak on Menorca. In the centre of the island it towers above the small town of Es Mercadal. Take the time to drive up the steep 3.2km climb to the summit and see the whole of the island spread out beneath you. There are sea views on all four sides and, on a clear day, the view stretches to the north coast of Mallorca.
The mountain is crowned by a convent which has become an important centre of pilgrimage and the neat vegetable and herb gardens beneath the terraces are still tended to by the community of nuns who live there. Visit the tiny chapel or have lunch in the rustic café and browse around the shop, packed with souvenirs and local produce.
Lloc de Menorca Zoo
Lloc de Menorca Zoo, located on the main road from Mahon to Alaior, is sure to be a hit with the kids! The zoo has a range of creatures from farm animals to more exotic zoo animals and children will also be able to pet some of the farm animals.

The zoo also has a small splash pool, 2 museums, a picnic area, snack bar and a gift shop.
Scuba Diving
With its underwater caves and coral encrusted rock formations, Menorca is recognised as one of the most spectacular diving locations in the Med. for scuba diving and snorkelling. Dive schools located around the island provide daily excursions and equipment for visiting qualified divers.
For the beginner - now is your chance - the qualified instructors can have you scuba diving in less than 2 hours! Parascending is now made easy with modern techniques of launch and recovery from the boats' platform - there's no need to even get wet! The not so adventurous are normally allowed, for a small fee, to ride along in the boat.
Horse Shows
There are many horse and pony riding centres around the island as well as a choice of spectacular equestrian shows which have now become a regular haunt for many of the islands' visitors.

The most popular horse show on the island is the Somni at the Son Martorellet Horse Farm, on the road from Ferreries to Cala Galdana. The farm is dedicated to the breeding, care and training of the Menorcan breed horse and puts on regular performances and dressage displays. Visitors will also be able to look around the farm and stables, and facilities include a gift shop, a choice of places to eat and a childrens play area.

Or why not venture to Calan Blanes or Sant Luis which both still practise the 200 year old traditional of trotting races? The jockey sits on a cart pulled by a horse and tries to maintain the trot - place your bets on the race!
