Villa location

Villa Sol Pollensa sits at the base of the Tramuntana Mountains, in the area known as Siller, just under a mile from Puerto Pollensa. A pleasant 20 minute walk through the countryside will bring you to the seafront and famous Pine Walk, lined with a huge choice of fashionable bistros, cafes and beachwear shops. Anyone who does decide to hire a car should also visit Pollensa Old Town, around 3 miles inland, which has several traditional restaurants as well as some beautiful architecture and countryside scenery.

Location features

Local markets and shopping

The plaza, or square, of Puerto Pollensa (Puerto Pollenca) is host to a lively market every Wednesday morning where you can buy everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to clothes, shoes and souvenirs. Or, venture to the seafront where you'll find the famous Pine Walk and beachfront promenade by the marina, lined with gift and beachwear shops. You can also pick up daily essentials and food here.

Bars and restaurants

Around Puerto Pollensa square, marina and seafront are a huge choice of stylish bistros and cafes, some with seating on the beach itself. The square also has a choice of lively bars with a great atmosphere day and night.

Beaches

Puerto Pollensa has a magnificent sandy beach a mile long, leading up to the marina. If you prefer the comfort of a smaller cove beach, Cala San Vicente, around 10 minutes' drive north, has 3 sandy inlets, with a handful of cafes nearby. The beaches of Player de Formentor, Mal Pas, Manresa and Alcudia are all also easily reached by car.

Family fun

The neighbouring resort of Alcudia has a popular waterpark, go-kart track and horse riding facilities, whilst Cala San Vicente has a mini golf course.

Places of interest

Pollensa (Pollenca) Old Town is well worth visiting. The town is filled with traditional paella and tapas restaurants, and has a great atmosphere. You can even venture up the 365 steps to the Calvari Church and admire the incredible panoramic views over the resort from the viewing point. Alcudia also has a historic old town surrounded by a Roman wall, a modern marina with a choice of fine dining restaurants and a great beach. Further afield is Europe's largest underground lake at the Caves of Drach, or enjoy a day trip to Palma City where you'll find a Gothic cathedral, aquarium, a never-ending choice of places to eat and designer shops, plus a lively nightlife scene!

Golf

Golf Pollensa golf course is around 15 minutes' drive away, just past the old town. A second golf course, Golf Alcanada, can be found around 30 minutes' drive away, on the far side of Alcudia Marina.

Other activities

From Puerto Pollensa Marina you can hire pedaloes, arrange several different boat trips and participate in various water sports. If you prefer to keep your feet on dry land, you can visit the nearby S'Albufera Nature Reserve, or enjoy walking and cycling around the countryside - a great way to see more of the local scenery!

Golf Pollensa

This 9 hole course is great when time is pressing. Protected by the mountains 'Puig de Santa Maria', Golf Pollença was designed in 1986 on a small hillside in a green valley overlooking the sea. The course is challenging with its tricky dog-legs and difficult green. No doubt one of the most beautiful courses in Mallorca

Golf Alcanada

Two essential requirements for the creation of a good golf course are a spectacular setting and a first rate architect. Both exist here in Alcanada, Alcudia. The designers are the legendary architects Robert Trent Jones Senior and Robert Trent Jones Junior.

The virgin terrain, gently sloping down towards the shoreline, with pine, olive and oak trees, offer marvellous views of the island of Alcanada with the lighthouse in the foreground and the mountains of the Sierra de Levante in the background.

Activity

The Caves of Drach

These are the most famous tourist attractions on the island of Majorca. They are also known as Dragon Caves due to the fact that the dragon features in many Majorcan fairytales and is believed to be a symbol of strength and a defence against intruders.

There are three chambers inside the caves, Cueva Negra (Black Cave), Cueva Blanca (White Cave) and Cueva Luis Salvator (Luis Salvator Cave). Today, visitors can take a boat ride on the lake and see the beautiful limestone formations, including stalagmites protruding from the rock-face and stalactites hanging down from the roof of the cave.

As part of their journey underground, they are accompanied by the sound of musicians performing classical music, including compositions by Chopin, every hour on a boat.

Joanne Sharples, 15-Sep-2012

The villa was excellent, I would highly recommend this to others and I would like to stay here again.
