Luz

Holiday Villas in Luz Resort

At the western end of the Algarve’s 145 kilometre coastline is the pretty resort of Luz where white-washed houses are clustered along the cobbled streets that lead down to the magnificent Praia da Luz Beach. Families will love the relaxed atmosphere and sheltered beach, ideal for smaller children. For couples, the stunning scenery and great food from this region are very attractive for a villa holiday. Luz also makes an excellent base for exploring the historic towns of Sagres and Lagos as well as the scenic hills behind the resort. This whole area is a surfing paradise, and surfers flock to the beaches to enjoy the annual festival that is staged at Sagres.

Exploring Luz On Villa Holidays

You’ll have a choice of mini markets and supermarkets plus local shops in the centre of Luz to stock up on your holiday essentials. Lagos is a 10 minute drive away and has a weekly fresh fruit and fish market where you can join the locals as they do their shopping. You’ll also find boutiques selling local produce and handicrafts.

Luz has a choice of restaurants and bars in the centre and along the beachfront. You can choose between traditional Portuguese dishes, international cuisine or relaxed beach bars. To try the Algarve fish stew, cataplana, or to enjoy the weekly jazz lunch, visit the medieval castle and restaurant at La Fortaleza overlooking Luz Beach.

Lagos is 10 minutes' drive away and has a lively atmosphere in the evenings, attracting a young international crowd. Try the freshly caught fish and local wine at the bistros and charming waterside bars around the chic marina. For traditional restaurants where you can enjoy a tasty chicken Piri Piri, visit the old town.

The picturesque sandy Luz Beach is right in the resort centre and watched over by the impressive Fortaleza da Praia da Luz castle and restaurant at one end and the Rocha Negra (black rock) cliff at the other. You can hire sunbeds and parasols to make the most of the Algarve’s excellent climate. There is good surfing too at Luz Beach, as well as scuba diving, snorkelling, waterskiing, paddleboats and a sailing school. When you want a break from the sun and sea, pick one of the beach bars and enjoy a relaxed lunch with a sea view.

Further west you can discover traditional fishing villages with good beaches including Burgau and Salema. Between Luz and Lagos are the beaches of Porto do Mos and Dona Ana beaches, with their beautiful white sands.

When you want a break from the beach, take to the water and make some family holiday memories. Try a leisurely dolphin watching cruise or a ride on the inflatables from Luz Beach. The Wake Salinas wake board park is full of slides, shoots and wave pools to practice your surfing tricks. For some friendly family competition, Lagos Aventura is a park where you can play paintball and try the aerial rope courses through the trees. The famous Slide and Splash waterpark is one of Europe’s largest and only 30 minutes from Luz.

In Lagos Old Town you can still see sections of the early Roman walls as well as the fortress guarding the harbour. Take a trip to Sagres to see the amazing sunset from Cape St Vincent and the impressive fort. If you want to see the countryside, the hills behind Lagos can be reached within 20 minutes and you can walk through the Barao de sao Joa National Forest.

For the golfers in your party there are several well-known championship standard courses close by which makes Luz an ideal base. Both Boavista and Palmares courses are within a 10 minute drive.
