Holiday Villas in Luz Resort

The village of Luz, like most towns on the Algarve coast was originally a fisherman's village before tourism arrived in the 60's. The town, now a well-developed resort particularly popular with English ex-pats, overlooks the Praia da Luz which translates as Beach of Light, a lovely long beach with gentle sloping sand and shallow waters that make it ideal for children.

Luz is an attractive little place, steeped in history and typically Portuguese in many respects with a comfortable, family-oriented atmosphere. It is close to Sagres, a lively fishing town with a picturesque harbour which becomes particularly busy at the end of the day when the fishermen return with their daily catch.

Exploring Luz On Villa Holidays

Praia da Luz with its palm trees and impressive coastal views is the perfect destination for a peaceful, low-key beach or pool-based villa holiday. Small white-washed houses cluster along the cobbled streets that lead down to the magnificent beach. The town still has considerable charm, partly due to a policy of low-rise development, so that the restaurants, cafés and shops along the promenade are not swamped by tower blocks. The major highlight of this little town is, and always has been, its beach.

The wild, rugged landscape is stunning, with the Sagres and Cape St. Vincent promontories - headlands 55 yards high - dropping dramatically into the sea. They were sacred places of worship in Sagres prehistoric past. The long, sandy beaches of the coast north of Cape St. Vincent are loved by surfers and paragliders. The most influential figure in the history of the area was Henry the Navigator, who set sail from these wild shores into the unknown.

This whole area is a surfing paradise, and surfers flock to the beaches to enjoy the annual festival that is staged at Sagres. Exposed beaches such as Tonel have helped to make Sagres the surfing capital of the Algarve. There is good surfing too at Praia da Luz, as well as scuba diving, snorkelling, waterskiing, paddleboats and a sailing school.

For the golfers in your party there are several well-known championship standard courses close by which makes Praia da Luz an ideal base. Both Boavista and Palmares courses are within a ten minute drive.
