Castelo has a picturesque sandy beach nestled prettily at the foot of sandstone cliffs with a popular restaurant overlooking the sea. In the resort, you’ll find a small selection of shops and a choice of restaurants.
Castelo lies on the wonderful stretch of coastline between Albufeira and Armacao de Pera, close to Sao Rafael and Gale. At its heart is the small bay with ochre coloured sandstone cliffs eroded over centuries into various rock formations surrounding a Blue Flag beach. There are plenty of facilities including a small beach restaurant, open year-round, which is particularly well known for its delicious fish dishes. During the summer months, loungers and parasols available for hire on the beach.
Castelo translates to castle, referring to a 16th century watchtower that once stood here to protect the coast from the attacks of Barbary pirates from North Africa. There are some remains of the old watchtower near the entrance of the beach but thankfully, the pirates have been replaced by tourists.
