Castelo is a lovely little resort with a picturesque sandy Blue Flag beach overlooked by a popular restaurant at the foot of sandstone cliffs. It’s a laidback and quiet destination, ideal for couples and families who want lazy days on the beach or by their villa’s private pool. Castelo is located between the larger towns of Albufeira and Armacao de Pera so you can enjoy their buzzing atmosphere and activities if you choose. You may prefer to wander to Praia da Coelha, another lovely beach close by. For day trips, Castelo has a great location in the centre of the Algarve. You can easily reach water parks, marinas, historic towns, a nature reserve and shopping centres. What more could you want from your Algarve holiday?

Exploring Castelo On Villa Holidays

Castelo has a mini market, a couple of shops as well as a supermarket within a 5 minutes' drive, ideal for stocking up on your day-to-day essentials. The municipal market on the outskirts of Albufeira sells fruit, fish and vegetables and is open every morning except Sundays. Visit the historic centre of Albufeira for souvenir shopping and browse the craft shops and traditional boutiques. For big brands, try Algarve Shopping just outside Guia, 15 minutes’ drive from Castelo.

There are a couple of good restaurants in Castelo or try the restaurants on the nearby beaches of Castelo and Coelha for light lunches, freshly grilled sardines or a cold beer. The old town of Albufeira has many bars and restaurants to suit a range of tastes and budgets. Choose a beachfront restaurant or find one in the maze of streets and around the main square. Many of the venues have live music and the party atmosphere keeps going long into the night. The marina in Albufeira has plenty of European and Asian restaurants and cool bars for a cocktail at sunset. Alternatively, to try the famous Algarve specialty, Piri Piri chicken, visit the town of Guia where it originated.

The sandy beaches of Castelo and Coelha set in sheltered coves are side by side separated by a rocky headland. There are plenty of sunbeds with parasols for hire, perfect for soaking up the Portuguese sunshine. Each beach has a restaurant when you want some shade and a light lunch. Castelo beach has a watersports centre too where you can try stand up paddle boarding and surfing. Several other lovely beaches are located along this stretch of coastline including Gale, Praia Grande, Salgados and Sao Rafael. They offer a mix of long beaches and hidden coves, frequently scattered with limestone caves and grottoes. A great way to discover as many Algarve beaches as possible is to take a boat trip.

Albufeira Marina is a 10 minute drive away and has plenty of activities to try from dolphin watching to paragliding and kayaking.

The popular Zoomarine is perfect for a day out, and just a 15 minute drive. It is a marine life theme park, home to hundreds of fantastic and fascinating sea creatures, exotic birds and tropical fish.

Slide and Splash, one of the largest waterparks in Europe, is also within a 30 minute drive.  

Across the Algarve there are small wine producers, including one, Adeja do Cantor, just outside Guia. You can have a guided tour and sample some of their produce before choosing a bottle or 2 to enjoy at your villa.

For total relaxation, try a thalassotherapy treatment at the day spa in Porches, 20 minutes drive away. You’ll also find an authentic Portuguese pottery here where you can choose a piece to take home.

Wildlife lovers can visit the nature reserve just behind Salgados beach where dozens of migratory and native birds can be seen.
