Villas in Italy

One of the best-loved destinations in Europe, Italy is a perfect holiday choice for so many reasons, not least the relaxed lifestyle based around some of life’s greatest pleasures – friends, family and food. A villa holiday in Italy means you can discover and appreciate this multi-faceted country, whether you choose to visit the iconic cultural sites or simply enjoy a homemade gelato by the sea.

Explore layers of history and culture in the towns and cities, from Roman ruins to the finest Renaissance masterpieces. Who can fail to appreciate the classical architecture of Rome, the artistic treasures of Florence and the fashionable elegance of Milan? The lesser-known cities in Italy also have their own individual draws, like the Baroque allures of Lecce, in the country’s Puglia region.

By contrast, the rustic landscapes of Puglia appear unchanged for millennia, dotted with small farms, vineyards and olive groves. The woodlands provide mushrooms, truffles and chestnuts, and are also home to wild boar. Villages are fun to explore as each has its own charm, although they do tend to go to sleep in the middle of the day, so plan your itinerary carefully! There are plenty of walking and cycling routes to help you find your way around on holiday, too.

The world-renowned cuisine is simple yet delicious, with each area creating its own special dishes based on locally grown ingredients. Relax in a trattoria and sample delicious family recipes and pizzas on holiday, treat yourself to some fine dining or alternatively, make your own feast. You can easily prepare a lunch from antipasti and fresh fruit and vegetables picked up at one of the many markets, then tuck in beside your private pool.

Make sure to try the regional wines which are made the length and breadth of Italy, from the sparkling whites of the Veneto to the deep, earthy reds of Puglia and Sicily. After all that, unwind by your villa pool and let the country’s charms pass you by. La dolce vita!

Best for…

 • Cultural city sightseeing

Italy Climate and When to Visit

In spring, the countryside is a delight of wildflowers, fruit blossom and hundreds of vineyards preparing for the coming season. Take time to view the rural areas at their absolute best, or get your hiking shoes on and walk into the hills to enjoy life at a slightly slower pace (you’re on holiday, after all). Spring, with its cooler temperatures, is also a good time to explore the towns and cities of Puglia, as they tend to be less busy before peak season.

Summer is the ideal time to discover the beaches and coves. You can sample freshly caught fish after a dip in the sea, or visit the outdoor cultural, food and religious festivals which take place throughout the season (this is your chance to join in the local celebrations!). Of course, you may prefer to relax by your private pool, shaded by gentle swaying silver-leafed olive trees, while staying in your holiday villa.

From mid-September, the vine leaves change from green to gold and red, and the grape harvest is celebrated with wine festivals.

Villa Plus in Italy

We have carefully chosen a range of villas in Italy, some perfect for a romantic break, others for small families, and a few for gathering a large group of friends or even two families together. With private pools, BBQs and even some outdoor kitchens, our villas are made for lazy days and evenings outdoors. As many of our villas have heated pools, you can enjoy a swim no matter which season you choose to visit. We also have rentals in countryside locations, so you can appreciate the slow pace of rural Italian life while still being within a few miles of towns and places to visit.

A villa holiday offers you complete freedom every day. Choose to get up early, do some shopping at the local market, read a book or simply do a spot of people watching and be back at your villa for lunch. Alternatively, rent a villa and enjoy a few lie ins while on holiday, then take a dip in your private pool before a relaxed brunch. Afterwards, lap up the sunshine before stepping out to dinner at a local restaurant.

With free WiFi in all our villas, researching the best sightseeing and dining options is easy. The town of Locorotondo is a trove of exquisite eateries, with Villa Plus rentals perfectly positioned for you to get the very most from your holiday here. We also have properties in Martina Franca, with a weekly market perfect for picking delicious cooking ingredients from, if you’d rather make your own food.

If you fancy a day out at the seaside, you can choose between the many between beach clubs and lidos which have onsite restaurants and sunbeds for hire. Alternatively, pack a picnic (made up from your self-catering villa) and parasol and head to one of the many coves, each with their own unique appeal. The seaside towns often have smaller beaches but still pack in plenty of character, with piazzas and winding streets to explore for a full day out.

Inland, the town of Alberobello is full of cultural and historic gems, like the small trulli buildings, which have been a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. We have villas to rent near here, as well as properties in other small Italian towns and communes, like Ceglie Messapica and Cisternino. Booking a holiday with us means you’ll get the chance to explore these quaint, yet wholly charming locations at a pace which suits you.

No matter how many times you’ve been to Italy, you won’t want to miss out on any of its cultural highlights. Every town has something to offer, from castles and palazzos to ornately decorated churches and public buildings. A trip to one of the local markets is a feast for the senses, too, with ripe fruit and vegetables bursting with flavour and colour.

Shopping at the market is a wonderful way to experiencing local life, with stall holders and regulars haggling over prices – you might even find a bargain for yourself! After doing so, return to the comfort of your holiday villa and cook up something authentic and appetising…

At the heel of the boot of Italy, Puglia is a food and drink lover's paradise with plenty of unique dishes to try with a glass of Primitivo in one of the region's restaurants.
