Lefkada Town (also known as Lefkas Town) is the bustling capital of the island, set right on the waterfront as you cross the bridge from the mainland. You’ll find bars and restaurants overlooking the sea plus a busy marina lined with boats. From here you can easily arrange excursions and boat trips. Head inland and discover the maze of narrow lanes full of colourful buildings, shops and restaurants.
Souvenir and clothing shops are dotted throughout Lefkada Town, ideal for picking up a gift or two to take home. You’ll also find plenty of bakeries and a couple of fresh fruit and vegetable stalls. Near the marina is a mini market, with larger supermarkets set on the outskirts of the town.
The narrow lanes of Lefkada Town are lined with restaurants and cafes, offering everything from Italian to traditional Greek cuisine. From 6pm to 6am every night the main street is pedestrianised with outdoor seating spilling out on to the pavements – perfect for alfresco dining. Head towards the marina and you’ll find a good choice of tavernas serving delicious fresh seafood, where you can enjoy watching the boats bob on the water. The night scene is lively in Lefkas Town, with a choice of bars offering plenty of cocktails and music.
The nearest beach is Agios Ioannis, just a few minutes’ drive or a 20 minute walk from the centre of Lefkas Town. Due to the windy conditions, this long stretch of sand and shingle beach is very popular with kite and wind surfers, it is also dotted with historic windmills. The beach has been awarded Blue Flag, and you’ll find a couple of tavernas and beach bars where you can rent a sunbed and enjoy a light lunch.
From the marina you can arrange boat trips to discover the stunning beaches of Lefkada, or explore the other Ionian islands. Alternatively, the popular resort of Nidri is just 25 minutes’ drive away, where you can take a ferry to the neighbouring island of Meganisi. Or why not visit the Faneromeni Monastery, located just 10 minutes’ drive out of town with panoramic views across to the mainland.
