Tucked away on the south coast of Kefalonia is the tranquil resort of Spartia where life revolves around the beach, Ionian Sea and a few authentic tavernas. Wander down to the harbour because the native Loggerhead turtles can often be seen swimming in the bay. There are plenty of beaches nearby for days out. Should you want to see more of Kefalonia, you’re in an excellent position with the island’s capital, Argostoli and scenic Mount Ainos within a short drive. For anyone who enjoys history and culture, nearby are the Castle of St George and the monastery of Agios Gerasimos. Whether you want complete relaxation or some exploration, Spartia could be ideal for your villa holiday.
Spartia has a village shop and mini market for daily essentials. Alternatively, the nearby capital of Argostoli has a greater choice of traditional and contemporary shops to explore. If you’re planning a BBQ, you can buy fresh fish from the local fishing boats which bring their catch into the harbour every morning, closely followed by large Loggerhead turtles looking for scraps. Find the rest of your ingredients at the street market stalls which sell fruit and vegetables plus a large variety of local produce.
There are a couple of good tavernas just a short walk from your villa, offering traditional Greek specialties including souvlaki, salads and grilled fish. Alternatively, Spartia village, a short drive away, has a cafe in its quaint village centre and a taverna nearby. For a wider choice of cafes and restaurants, visit Argostoli. The locals like to gather in Villianos Square for a coffee and chat during the daytime, but the restaurants and bars really come to life in the evening.
Spartia Beach is a quiet and sandy beach, with warm clear waters, ideal for sunbathing and swimming or enjoying a homemade picnic. There are a couple of good tavernas above the beach which have lovely views over the open water. The neighbouring resorts of Trapezaki and Lourdas are also within easy reach by car and have a choice of fantastic sandy beaches to explore. Lourdas has a choice of watersports to try.
Why not be a skipper for the day and explore the beautiful coastline? You can also take a glass bottomed boat trip from Argastoli Harbour, a fun way to try and spot the turtles. The resort of Lourdas, 20 minutes' drive away, offers boat hire as well as water ski and jet ski facilities in high season.
The Venetian Castle of St George and the Monastery of Agios Gerasimos are reminders of Kefalonia’s Venetian and Byzantine eras and an easy drive from Spartia. The Drogarati Cave and Lake Melissani, 2 of the top natural sites on Kefalonia, are only 40 minutes away and you can combine them for a full day out.
