Villa Location
Villa Elizabeth enjoys an excellent central location in the stunning Skala resort. A hop, skip and a jump from the sandy beach, this detached villa is also within walking distance of essential holiday amenities. You'll have plenty of restaurants and tavernas to dine in dotted along the coastline heading towards the village. If you tire of sun, sea and sand, there are some interesting sites to explore nearby including the ruins of an ancient Roman villa.

Location features

Local markets and shopping

You'll find plenty of options for stocking up the villa in Skala. There are 2 supermarkets, plenty of mini markets and some specialist shops such as butchers, bakers and fishmongers. You'll also find a selection of gift shops and jewellers ideal for picking up souvenirs.

Bars and restaurants

Skala is home to an abundance of bars, restaurants and tavernas serving traditional Greek cuisine. You'll also find some international cuisine on offer, including Chinese and Italian, as well as some excellent fresh fish restaurants. There are a few bars in the resort with live music in the summer, offering a lively atmosphere come evening.

Skala Beach is a long, expansive bay of both sand and shingle. Hugely popular for watersports and boat hire, there are plenty of activities to get involved with. You'll find sunbeds and parasols available to hire and a wide variety of beach bars to keep you refreshed. A little further afield is Kaminia Beach, 15 minutes' drive along the coast. A beautiful stretch of sand with shallow water, this beach is great for children.

Family fun

Why not try out watersports such as jet skiing, banana boat rides or kayaking on Skala Beach? There is also the option of joining a fantastic glass bottom boat cruise which goes to neighbouring islands such as Zante, Ithaca and Fiskardo - ideal for a full day adventure!

Places of interest

Just 15 minutes' walk away at the edge of Skala village, are the remains of a Roman villa that dates back to the 2nd century. With beautifully preserved mosaics and ancient inscriptions, it's fascinating to visit.

Alternatively, visit the old village of Skala. Destroyed by an earthquake in 1953, you can visit the ruins of what was once a farming village. Perched up in the hills above Skala, it's very popular with walkers and offers fabulous views.

Activities and things to do
Glass Bottom Boat
Based in the Southern resort of Skala, "Nautilus" is a specially constructed boat of high standards. Due to these high standards there is little movement in the boat, which is absolutely necessary because of the glass bottom. The possibility to watch the seabed, to view the rocky coast or to cruise the Ionian Sea waters at a speed of up to 30 knots, feeling the breeze and the sea very close will ensure a pleasant cruise.
Probably the most legendary of all Greek islands, Ithaca is still one of the least known. Beautiful and still unspoiled by tourism, the island of Odysseus is only a short distance from Kefalonia. These islands are undoubtedly jewels in the Ionian Sea.

Ithaca is the second smallest and the most under-developed island in the Ionian. In the trees and mountains, the impossibly blue sea and in every little village with their brightly coloured blue doors and rough walls lost under countless layers of whitewash. Nestling under stunning sunsets life is unhurried and pleasure is found in the most simple of pastimes.
Loggerhead Turtle Sanctuary
There is a protected nesting site at Kefalonia called Kaminia beach. The sea Turtle Protection Society work hard and long to protect the fascinating creatures when they come in to nest on the beach. The females heave and tug themselves across the beach to find a nesting site digging holes and laying small round eggs. An average nest would have 120 eggs and once they are safely covered with warm sand the female returns to the water. Some females will lay as many as four times during the nesting season and the eggs take about two months to hatch. The baby turtles dig their way out at night and head instinctively for the sea. This natural pattern can be disrupted by noise and lights. Sometimes the body clock in the baby turtles goes away and they pop out during the day. If you see a turtle its best not to touch it as its essential to their survival that they make their own way to the sea. The Marine Turtle Project was set up some years ago to observe and record the nesting female turtles on the beaches near to the villages of Skala and Ratzakli on the south-eastern tip of the island. This project has continued to this day and incorporated a conservation programme to promote the protection of the beaches where these creatures lay their eggs. Just outside Katelios you will find a little old schoolhouse which has been transformed and is now the base for The Katelios Group for the Research and Protection of Marine and Terrestrial Life. The group was founded in 1994 and consists mainly of local people with an interest in the long term future of Kefalonia
