Villa Location
Villa Mirsini is situated south of the island in Old Skala, set high above the extensive Elios countryside with spectacular panoramic sea views, overlooking Kefalonia's cousins Zante , Ithaca and the Greek mainland. A haven for countryside lovers away from the hustle and bustle. The resort of Skala is only a 15 minute drive away, offering a great selection of bars and tavernas. Beach lovers are also well catered for with a number of excellent sand and shingle bays nearby. Our villa Estiasi is on the same lane - perfect for larger groups wanting seperate accomodation.

Location features

Local markets and shopping

The resort of Skala has a main supermarket on the beach front and a small selection of mini markets, bakeries and assorted gift shops. Most are located on the main street running from the top of the village down to the beach road.

Bars and restaurants

Skala has a large choice of bars, tavernas and restaurants, many overlooking the beach. Here you can enjoy a light meze lunch or an alfresco dinner with picturesque views of the sea - a true Greek experience!

Beaches

Skala is well known for its long sand and shingle beach which shelves gently in to the Ionian ocean. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for hire as well as a large variety of water sports from Skala beach. Why not jump on one of the daily cruises or glass bottom boat trips and spot one of the loggerhead turtles that frequent Kefalonia? The sandy bays of Mounda and Kaminia are also within a 15 minute drive. Kaminia Beach is protected due to it being a nesting ground for Loggerhead Turtles and night-time 'turtle watches' are organised. Another great option is Katelios Beach, an un-commercialised sand and shingle bay.

Family fun

Leisure activities are mainly beach and sea based. For those looking for more excitement, a large selection of water sports including jet skis, kayaking and donuts are available from Skala Beach. If you want to explore the coastline you can also hire a boat, pack a picnic and find some undiscovered pristine bays.

Places of interest

Old Skala Village itself has the remains of a Roman villa constructed in the 3rd century AD. The house belonged to a wealthy owner and the floor has well preserved mosaics depicting gods and animals. Take a boat tour through the stunning Melissani Lake, a natural cave system on the east of the island, where sunlight shines through the roof of the cavern causing the water beneath to light up. The cave is reachable within an hour's drive.

Other activities

Kefalonia is dominated by Mount Ainos which has been designated a national park. A tarmac road goes all the way up to its peak, 1,628m above sea level, giving panoramic views of the Island and across to Ithaca and Zante. The best time to walk is spring and autumn when the temperatures are cooler and you can enjoy the wild flowers.

Activities and things to do
Activity
Loggerhead Turtle Sanctuary
There is a protected nesting site at Kefalonia called Kaminia beach. The sea Turtle Protection Society work hard and long to protect the fascinating creatures when they come in to nest on the beach. The females heave and tug themselves across the beach to find a nesting site digging holes and laying small round eggs. An average nest would have 120 eggs and once they are safely covered with warm sand the female returns to the water. Some females will lay as many as four times during the nesting season and the eggs take about two months to hatch. The baby turtles dig their way out at night and head instinctively for the sea. This natural pattern can be disrupted by noise and lights. Sometimes the body clock in the baby turtles goes away and they pop out during the day. If you see a turtle its best not to touch it as its essential to their survival that they make their own way to the sea. The Marine Turtle Project was set up some years ago to observe and record the nesting female turtles on the beaches near to the villages of Skala and Ratzakli on the south-eastern tip of the island. This project has continued to this day and incorporated a conservation programme to promote the protection of the beaches where these creatures lay their eggs. Just outside Katelios you will find a little old schoolhouse which has been transformed and is now the base for The Katelios Group for the Research and Protection of Marine and Terrestrial Life. The group was founded in 1994 and consists mainly of local people with an interest in the long term future of Kefalonia
Activity
Mount Ainos National Park
In 1962 Mount Ainos was declared a National Park by the Greek state. The forested area of the range now covers an area of 2826 hectares. The larger part of Mount Ainos is given over exclusively to the unique Kefalonia pine (Abies cephalonica), with its straight trunk, its rich pyramid-shaped foliage and its characteristic pine needles. The species retains its purity on Kefalonia since it is protected by the isolation of the island. The highest mountain on Kefalonia, Ainos, extends like a spinal cord through the southern part of island. It has a total length of 10 km and its highest peak is Mount Soros, at 1628m. Mount Roudi is an extension of this range to the north-west, the highest peak being Yioutari, which rises to 1125m.
Activity
Kefalonia Robola Wine
The Robola wine cooperative winery is located at Kefalonia Island, Ionian Islands, and western Greece. More specific at the plateau of the Community of Omala, in an altitude of 700 metres, in the slopes of the gorgeous and green full Ainos Mountain

In Kefalonia the unique wine, Robola, is grown and produced. A harmonious white wine of high quality, it is one of the most well known wines in Greece (Hellas). Its wonderful balanced taste, strong note and unique white colour are just a few of the qualities which have established its reputation world-wide.The cultivation of this particular grape is known to be really hard work on the slopes of Mountain Ainos, where the soil is poor and stony, and vineyards can be found as high as 800 m.

The winery is open from 9am to 8.30 pm and is well worth a visit.
Activity
Horse Riding
The nearest riding schools are located near Sami and Lixouri where you can learn to ride, improve your skills or simply enjoy yourself. There are mountain trails and beach riding to swimming with the horses.

Activity
Melissani and Drogarati Caves
Located in the area of Karavomilos near Sami, lies the Melissani cave which is undoubtedly among Kefalonia's most breathtaking attractions. Discovered in 1951 by speleologist Yiannis Petrohilos, Melissani cave also includes a beautiful lake with crystal blue waters which is 22 metres below ground level and its maximum depth is about 30 metres.

The complete tour is done by boat, first making a round trip around the first hall with the hole in the roof. Then the boat passes the island on the opposite wall, where a small channel exists. This channel is too narrow to row, but there is a rope at the wall and the gondolier pulls the boat through. The second hall is a huge cavern with an arched roof, which was also formed by a collapse, but this cave is more to the centre of the island and because of the slope of the hill, the overlying rock is still thick enough. The second chamber has numerous big stalactites and stalagmites.

Drogarati's Cave, which is also close to Sami is 60m deep and was discovered 300 years ago, when a part of it was destroyed because of a strong earthquake, and so the entrance was created. Initially the cave was developed and used by the community of Haliotata, under the supervision of the speleologist Mrs. Petrocheilos and since 1963 it has been open to the public.
