Villa Location
Villa Vounaki is a detached property set on a country road above the sought after resort of Lourdas and is conveniently located within walking distance of the restaurants, bars and beach. The villa also has magnificent views over the sea and surrounding hillside. Our villa Chrissos is next door.

Location features

Local markets and shopping

Lourdas has a couple of small shops and mini markets, with the nearest just 320 yards from your villa - great for stocking up on holiday essentials. If you are looking for a bigger selection then head to Argostoli, only 25 minutes' drive away, with some good clothes and souvenir shops. There is also a daily local market selling local fruit and vegetables as well as fish.

Bars and restaurants

Lourdas has a number of good tavernas and bars offering a relaxed atmosphere, just a short downhill walk from your villa. Many of the restaurants serve traditional Greek cuisine, but you will also find some seafood on offer too.

Beaches

Often referred to as the most beautiful beach in Kefalonia, Lourdas is the longest stretch on the south coast of the island. The sand and shingle beach is a short, downhill walk from the villa, where you can hire parasols and umbrellas. During high season small motor boats are available to hire and there is also a lifeguard.

Family fun

The best way to discover Kefalonia is from the water. Why not hire a boat and explore the pebbly coves and small bays, or spend the day snorkelling in the crystal clear water?

Places of interest

The Castle of St. George, just 20 minutes' drive away, is well worth a visit for the stunning views alone. Perched on a peak above the village of Peratata, the original castle dates back to the 11th century. Alternatively, tucked away high in the hills above Skala you will find the ruins of Old Skala. Once a thriving agricultural community, the village was largely destroyed in the devastating earthquake of 1953. You can still see the ruined remains of houses and a church, in between the newly built buildings. From here, head down to the resort of Skala, where you can visit the ruins of an old Roman villa and see the spectacular mosaics.

Other places of interest

The island's capital, Argostoli is well worth a visit for shopping as well as relaxing at one of the restaurants on the harbour.

Activities and things to do
Activity
Loggerhead Turtle Sanctuary
There is a protected nesting site at Kefalonia called Kaminia beach. The sea Turtle Protection Society work hard and long to protect the fascinating creatures when they come in to nest on the beach. The females heave and tug themselves across the beach to find a nesting site digging holes and laying small round eggs. An average nest would have 120 eggs and once they are safely covered with warm sand the female returns to the water. Some females will lay as many as four times during the nesting season and the eggs take about two months to hatch. The baby turtles dig their way out at night and head instinctively for the sea. This natural pattern can be disrupted by noise and lights. Sometimes the body clock in the baby turtles goes away and they pop out during the day. If you see a turtle its best not to touch it as its essential to their survival that they make their own way to the sea. The Marine Turtle Project was set up some years ago to observe and record the nesting female turtles on the beaches near to the villages of Skala and Ratzakli on the south-eastern tip of the island. This project has continued to this day and incorporated a conservation programme to promote the protection of the beaches where these creatures lay their eggs. Just outside Katelios you will find a little old schoolhouse which has been transformed and is now the base for The Katelios Group for the Research and Protection of Marine and Terrestrial Life. The group was founded in 1994 and consists mainly of local people with an interest in the long term future of Kefalonia
Activity
Horse Riding
The nearest riding schools are located near Sami and Lixouri where you can learn to ride, improve your skills or simply enjoy yourself. There are mountain trails and beach riding to swimming with the horses.

Activity
Kefalonia Robola Wine
The Robola wine cooperative winery is located at Kefalonia Island, Ionian Islands, and western Greece. More specific at the plateau of the Community of Omala, in an altitude of 700 metres, in the slopes of the gorgeous and green full Ainos Mountain

In Kefalonia the unique wine, Robola, is grown and produced. A harmonious white wine of high quality, it is one of the most well known wines in Greece (Hellas). Its wonderful balanced taste, strong note and unique white colour are just a few of the qualities which have established its reputation world-wide.The cultivation of this particular grape is known to be really hard work on the slopes of Mountain Ainos, where the soil is poor and stony, and vineyards can be found as high as 800 m.

The winery is open from 9am to 8.30 pm and is well worth a visit.
Activity
Boat Hire and Watersports
Hiring a boat is a fantastic way of exploring Kefalonia's coastlines. A licence is not required, nor do you need previous experience as novices will receive introductory instruction in boat handling before being let loose.

Watersports, yacht charter (skippered or bareboat), scuba diving and riding are also available.

Activity
Agios Giorgios Castle
The medieval castle of Agios Georgios is situated near the village of Peratata, on a 320m hill. The castle was built in the 13th century to fortify the island's old capital which was housed here until 1757 AD. The castle owes its name to the large church of Agios Georgios, which is situated in the region.

The castle, along with the island, fell in succession into the hands of the Byzantines, the Franks, the Turks and the Venetians. On 24 December 1500, after a persistent battle with the Venetians, the Spanish and the people of Kefalonia, the castle was liberated from the Turks.

The severe damage to the buildings led to a restoration supervised by the mechanic Tsimaras, which lasted for four years. Until the earthquake in 1636, the castle thrived and housed storage rooms, a hospital, barracks, private residencies and a prison in which the more liberal people of Kefalonia were kept, whom the current conquerors considered dangerous.

The Castle's entire surface area is 16,000 square metres, and the walls are 600 m. long and 1,015 m. high. The three ramparts face Argostoli, the East and Peratata, respectively and includes loopholes, observatories and cannon positions. Inside the Castle, its possible to gaze at the tower called "Old Fortress" as well as part of the walls and underground arche. There is, in addition the throne of the Venetian Lord and a catholic church, where the nobles of Kefalonia were buried.

Villa Vounaki Customer Reviews

Susan Beasley, 18-May-2014

Villa Vounaki was exactly as it was shown in the photographs on the website. The reaction from us all on arrival was WOW! We immediately felt at home, lots of clean space to relax in, both indoors and out. this was important as we were a mixed party. There was a huge amount of crockery and glassware so we weren't washing up all the time. The beds/pillows/bedding were excellent, lovely big rooms, lots of wardrobe space and hangers too. Car parking was simple and the key box was brilliant, so no need to meet up to get the key, or the risk hiding it. Wifi worked well and easy to access. We made use of the BBQ several times. The maid service was excellent she visited every other day, I had only expected 1 midweek visit. The pool was enjoyed by us all and was beautifully clean. We had a fabulous holiday thank you!

We were absolutely delighted with the villa and the location - as four very well-travelled (mature!) ladies we were all agreed that this was one of the best most relaxing holidays we have had - the villa was equipped to a very high standard and beautifully situated. Thank you Villa Plus - we will be back!

Nothing could have improved an idyllic break! There were only 4 of us so we were spoilt for space and the villa exceeded our expectations. Excellent furnishing in and out of the villa. Needed a car for certain and the walk back from the beach was a little tough but nothing a fitter family would not cope with! Great range of restaurants a mile or so away by car, heading up the hill. Good range too by the beach which is unspoilt and uncommercialised. Drive round the island anti-clockwise (Nicole's top tip!). So quiet as an island. Luxury break.
