Sporting Activities In Crete


There is a variety of sports that can be enjoyed in the island of Crete from cycling round the island and exploring to Scuba Diving in the turquoise sea. What ever you decide to do it will be a holiday to remember.
Deres Horse Riding Horse riding is offered at a school in Deres about 20 minutes from Maleme. All levels of proficiency are catered for from beginners to experienced riders with a variety of rides and durations.
Chania Scuba Diving This diving centre is PADI certified and takes divers to various locations around the Akrotiri. Divers of all abilities are catered for and instructors are all PADI certified.
Almyrida Water Sports Almyrida is a village located in the mouth of of Souda Bay opposite the Akrotiri peninsular. It is a charming village, with a sandy/shingle beach where a variety of water sports are available.
Hersonissos Watersports Water sports such as jet skiis, banana boats, water skiing and scuba diving can all be found at Star Beach Water Park on the outskirts of Hersonissos. There is also a family area with pools and water features for young visitors as well restaurants and shops. Entrance is free.
Scuba Diving Registered Paddy scuba diving centres are available in many resorts offering diving in caves at night, wall diving, as well as deep diving. In-experienced divers can catered for at selected locations. A pick up service is available to the venue.

Horse Riding Horse riding is available Georgioupolis a seaside village resort between Chania and Rethymnon. They offer several different programmes according to ability as well as guided nature walks around the lake of Kournas. This is a very rural area and the White Mountains form a stunning background especially in the spring and early summer when the mountain peaks are snow drenched.
Water Park The water park just outside Chania is a great way for all the family to have fun. The rides cater for all ages and abilities. There are a couple of water parks close to Heraklion and it might be a good combination to visit the Crete Aquarium at the same time. They are easy to find and open mid May (weather permitting) and closed in October.
Outdoor Pursuits Those who enjoy the great outdoors will undoubtedly enjoy many happy hours in the mountainous areas around Chania and Rethymnon. In the Spring and Autumn, many visitors come purely for the chance to walk through the unspoilt areas of Crete. There are many gorges which are not as long as the Samaria Gorge but are equally as wonderful with flora and fauna unique to Crete. Binoculors and camera are a must. Guided walks can be arranged too.
Cookery Lessons May be you would like to take a day away from the beach and learn how to make a traditional Cretan meal? Small groups of people are taught by a local lady who explains the Cretan diet and provides written recipes for cooks to take home. Between 5-6 different dishes are cooked then eaten together at a refectory table next to the kitchen.
Windsurfing This very popular sport can be found on the beach in Almyrida as well as some beaches west of Chania in and around the resort of Platanias. Boards of varying sizes with sails to suit varying weather conditions can be hired. Lifejackets are also provided.
General Watersports Nearly all resorts with organised beaches offer water sports of some description depending on the local conditions. They may vary from paragliding, waterskiing, kyaking, banana boats and jet skiing.
Sailing Boats Sailing boats can hired with crew from Chania harbour taking you out towards Balos and Falasarna at times convenient to their customers. Sunset is a fabulous time and many say that the sunsets of west Crete easily rival the famous sunsets of Santorini.
Bike Hire A really great way to get around and see the local areas is by bicycle. They have become very popular in the last couple of years and can be hired in several places in both Rethymnon and Chania. Hellas Bike is based in Chania and Crete Bikes have their main office in Rethymnon. Both offer bike hire as well as organised tours.
