There are lively parts of the resort, while the Old Village offers a more traditional Greek experience with a relaxed atmosphere. Nearby is the Minoan Palace of Malia, a good example of the distinctive architecture of this important civilisation – a must see for history enthusiasts. Another big draw to the area is the fascinating Spinalonga island, which the Victoria Hislop novel ‘The Island’ is based on. You can visit by taking a boat trip from Aghios Nikolaos, Elounda or Plaka.
Malia has plenty of souvenir shops and clothes shops as well as mini markets - perfect for stocking up your villa. You’ll find larger supermarkets a short drive away in Hersonissos. Aghios Nikolaos is home to a vibrant farmers’ market where you’ll find fresh local produce including honey, fruit and local cheese.
There are countless bars and restaurants to enjoy that offer a range of international cuisine. From pizzerias and steak houses to Indian restaurants, all tastes are catered for. The Old Village of Malia has an authentic Greek feel with a few family run tavernas. The nearby village of Milatos has some excellent fish eateries while Sissi village has a picturesque waterfront setting ideal for a laid back lunch with a view.
Malia Beach is a wide expanse of sand that stretches the length of the resort. A popular choice, it has everything you need – from sunbeds and parasols to watersports and bars. Nearby Potamos Beach is another good option with sandy shores and a restaurant.
Thrill seekers may enjoy a visit to Kartland Malia, a go-karting track suitable for adults and children alike. There’s also the fantastic Acqua Plus waterpark. A short drive away, you can be whizzing down shoots and slides in no time. Or why not visit Dinosauria Park? This interactive theme park has huge dinosaur replicas, a 5D cinema and even a Dino Hospital.
History enthusiasts will love the Minoan Palace of Malia. Get lost wandering the ruins of this once opulent palace. There’s also the family run Lyrakis Olive Mill a short drive away. Why not book a tour where you can sample the delicious produce? It also makes a great souvenir to take back home.
