Villa Location
Villa Desire is located 3 miles from Aghios Nikolaos Town, which has a variety of shops and places to eat and drink, as well as a choice of lovely local beaches. The town's focal point is the near perfectly circular Voulismeni Lake, overlooked by several traditional tavernas and boutiques, where, according to legend, the goddess Athena once used to bathe. There's also plenty of historical and fun family attractions and activities in the nearby areas, easily reached within a short drive.

Location features

Local markets and shopping

The local Wednesday market in Aghios Nikolaos offers the freshest fruit and vegetables from local producers along with all manner of household items and clothing, too. The shops in Aghios Nikoloas cater for all budgets and there are various jewellery shops as well as venues selling hand turned olive wood items, herbs and spice mixes. There's also a supermarket within a few minutes' drive for daily essentials and BBQ supplies.

Bars and restaurants

Aghios Nikolaos has many restaurants and tavernas to choose from - you can dine somewhere different every night! Sophisticated restaurants serving international cuisine with equally impressive wine lists sit alongside authentic Greek tavernas offering delicious homemade dishes, typical of Crete. After dinner, take a leisurely stroll around the harbour and stop at any of the waterside bars for a drink as the sun sets over the resort.

There are a number of beaches dotted along the coastline, all within a short drive of Villa Desire. Almyros, Ammos and Ammoudara are some of the most popular sandy beaches here, where sunbeds and umbrellas are available for hire. Small beachside cafes and tavernas provide drinks and snacks if you don't want to take a picnic with you.

Family fun

Children are well-catered for, with a choice of fun family attractions in the surrounding areas. Water City waterpark is around an hours' drive away, and has various water-based rides and pools for all ages. There are also 2 aquariums as well as horse riding facilities within 50 minutes, heading further west along the coast towards Hersonissos.

Places of interest

The island of Crete is a particularly popular choice of holiday destination for anyone wanting to see and learn more about its wonderful history. Aghios Nikolaos is home to both an archaeology and ethnological museum. You can also take a day trip into Heraklion, an hour's drive away, where you'll find the Heraklion Archaeological Museum of Crete and the Natural History Museum. There are also beautiful churches and cathedrals, including the Cathedral of St Minas.

A short drive south of Heraklion is the Palace of Knossos in Knossos, the first capital city of Crete. The palace is connected with several of Greece's most well-known legends, including the myth of the Labyrinth and the Minotaur, and Daedalus and Icarus.

Top of many visitors 'places to visit' is the island of Spinalonga. You can catch a boat to the island from Aghios Nikolaoks and explore its fascinating history and beautiful architecture. The island was originally used as a look out for invaders during the Turkish occupation and later became a leper colony, until a cure was found in 1957. Most recently, Spinalonga was used as the setting for Victoria Hislop's bestselling novel, The Island.

Crete Golf Club in Hersonissos is around 45 minutes' drive from Aghios Nikolaos.

Other activities

Take a drive up to the Lassithi Plateau where much of the agricultural produce is exported both to the mainland as well as within Europe.

Crete is also home to many varieties of wildlife, including Griffon Vultures, Bearded Vultures, Golden Eagles and Peregrine Vultures to name a few.

There is also the Caves of Dicti which are worth visiting for the magnificent stalagmites and stalactites.

Activities and things to do
A trip to Spinalonga should not be missed. This is a very small island near to Elounda which was a Leper colony until the 1950s. It has more recently been brought to our attention as the setting for Victoria Hislops 'The Island'. Take a ferry from either Aghios Nikolaos, Elounda or Plaka and visit the island and the village. Restoration projects have been gong on for some time and shops and houses can be seen in some semblance of their original state.

Knossos, the ruins of the palace said to have been the seat of king Minos dating back to 2000 BC the first excavation bagan by Minos Kalokerinos in 1878 followed by the englishman, Sir Arthur Evans who virtually uncovered the whole palace.
This is a Minoan archaeological site dating back to around 1500BC. It is located near the busy main road from Aghios Nikolaos to Sitia, without any boundary walls which visitors can see unhindered. It has a small palace as well as cobbled streets, houses and cemetery. It would seem that Gournia was a town which produced many everyday household items as well as weaponry and pottery. The coast was much closer and there are signs of a road leading to a harbour.

Labyrinth Park
As the name suggests this is a maze where the objective is to find the centre and the Minotaur, then find the escape route!! Its great fun for all the family and the route is changed regularly. It's a 3D maze with steps and bridges too just to make it more interesting! Along the way visitors will learn more about the myths and legends surrounding the famous Minotaur of Knossos.

There is also a mini golf and cafe, too for less energetic explorers. Children can also have a go in the pottery workshop where Minoan items are reproduced. An eco-garden with aromatic Cretan herbs, fruit trees and vegetable garden are all cultivated to ecological standards.

Horse Riding Karteros
Horse riding is available at the Riding Academy of Crete in Karteros in just over 14 miles from Hersonissos.
