Villa location

Paleokastritsa is one of the best known areas on the island. It has fantastic horse shoe shaped bays with crystal clear water and spectacular scenery. The resort has a good selection of traditional tavernas, cosmopolitan beach bars and speed boat hire to discover more of the dramatic coastline of Corfu. The north of the island and its large commercial resorts of Sidari and Acharavi are a 40 minute drive away, whilst the island's capital is a 30 minute drive away heading south.

Location features

Local markets and shopping

A mini market can be found a mile away with many more in the resort centre too. For traditional crafts and local produce, the nearby village of Makrades has plenty to offer from handmade lace handicrafts and locally produced honey. High end boutiques and a vast array of souvenir shops can all be found in the islands capital, Corfu Town, about 30 minutes' drive away.

Bars and restaurants

The main road leading into Paleokastritsa has plenty of tavernas, some with breathtaking views over the bays, and from the road leading to the beaches are a variety of beach bars. The nearby traditional village of Doukades has authentic tavernas in the square offering good home cooking.

Beaches

Close to the villa are a variety of beaches, from sandy bays to small rocky coves. Some of the best beaches can discovered by hiring a small speed boat or booking a local water taxi.

Family fun

Paleokastritsa has plenty to offer. Boats run continually to the blue water caves with blue water, you can hire pedaloes and there's even a reptile house!

Places of interest

The resort has a monastery and small museum worth seeing, as is the byzantine fortress of Angelokastro nearby. Further afield, on the other side of Corfu Town, is the Achilleon Palace and Gardens, the former summer residence of Empress Sissy of Austria.

Golf

There is only one golf course on Corfu, in Ermones in the centre of the island.

Other activities

Paleokastritsa is very popular with keen walkers. You can walk up to mountain villages and local churches set on the hillside.

Remember…

Every villa comes with its own manual, complete with details of the best restaurants, taxis, local amenities and activities. And of course, our reps are on hand to make sure you love your holiday more. If you need any advice or tips on the local area, they will be more than happy to help.

Activity

Sailing

Sailing is a wonderful pastime on the generally calm Ionian waters with its sheltered coves and steady afternoon breezes, and as you would expect, there are sailing schools dotted around the island.

In Avlaki (well known for constant breezes) there is a dingy sailing school with many different types of small "fun and fast" craft.

For those that prefer larger craft there are various yachting agencies and private charter individuals in Gouvia Marina that offer captained or bare boat charters on request.
Activity

Watersports

Virtually all major beaches and many of the smaller ones have water sports of one form or another available. ,

Generally pedalos and small canoes can be found everywhere and sports activities include water-skiing and water boards, para-gliding, ringos, banana boats and the latest 'fish' which works on a similar principal. ,

Most water sports jetties offer lessons and some offer courses for children.

There are very few places that now offer jet skiing. , One beach is Gouvia beach where a qualified instructor has tow jet skis available for hire.
Activity

Corfu Golf Club

Designed by the famous architect Donald Harradine the Corfu course has been praised by many as one of the best kept in Europe and he has blended the natural resources of the lovely Ropa Valley with man made hazards to make the course a good but fair test. It is as enjoyable for the scratch player as it is for the long handicap one. The course is open 7 days a week.

 ,

The magnificent greens of Penncross Bent are considered to be the finest in the Mediterranean, the treelined fairways and the sandtraps combined with several lakes and meandering streams, make an attractive picture against a backcloth of high hills. A new modern irrigation system keeps the golf course in excellent condition even through the hot summer months. Over the past 3 years the golf course and clubhouse has undergone a total renovation. Bunkers have been redesigned, deepened, drained and filled with white sand, shipped in from a nearby Greek island.

 ,

Suitable for all levels of player with qualified instructors on hand for beginners and equipment rental available. ,It is also ideally placed for families who perhaps don't all share the same interest in the sport being a mere 10 minute drive from Aqualand, the largest waterpark on the island, 20 minutes out of Corfu town and 10 minutes from the nearest beach at Ermones.

It has a large well-appointed clubhouse and restaurant and is open all year round.

Activity

Waterparks

There are ,2 waterparks on the Island: Hydropolis on the outskirts of Acharavi on the north coast, ,and the larger Aqualand in Ag Ioannis, just outside Corfu Town. ,Both parks have a good selection of slides, pools and various refreshments available. Aqualand is by far the largest of the waterparks and in fact one of the largest waterparks in Europe with a big selection of rides and activities for all ages (including a very sedate 'lazy river' for older party members!) It has a couple of cafes and snack bars, a small shopping area and plenty of sun loungers and is open from 9am-8pm daily all Summer.

One of the hotels in Sidari also has a few small waterslides and a pool, open to the public.

Activity

Mon Repos

A beautiful villa built in lovely grounds in 1831 by the British, Mon Repos later became the summer residence of the Greek royal family. Built in part on the site of the ancient city of Corcyra (Corfu) with extensive grounds leading down to the sea it is a wonderful place for a stroll out of the heat of the sun, the easy walkways being shaded by a wide variety of enormous trees. Some evidence of the ancient city walls and a small ancient temple can be found and there is small museum inside the original villa that shows the progress and some artifacts from the continuing excavations on the site.
Activity

Pontikonisi

The tiny picturesque island of Pontikonisi (or Mouse island) and the nearby convent of Vlacherna has become a symbol for Corfu appearing on almost all promotions for the island. With its tiny miniature Byzantine chapel set on top of the little tree covered island it is a pleasant place to visit and can be reached by local boats that do regular trips from Kanoni.

Activity

Pantocrator Mountain

The highest point of Corfu and standing majestically ,overlooking the North East corner of Corfu, Corfu Town and the mainland beyond.

One of the many beautiful driving routes on the island takes you up through several small villages including Spartillas, known (along with its sister village Lakones on the opposite coast) as 'the balcony of Corfu' because of its spectacular views.

Follow on through Strinillas, one of the original hidden villages, , built out of sight of the coast and therefore the marauding pirates of the time and up a narrow road to Mount Pantocrator the highest point on the island at 906 metres. ,

There is also an adventurous drive from the North of the island, but this is best done in a four wheel drive vehicle.

The last section of the road is better walked by the nervous but the fantastic panoramic views from the monastry and café, at the top are well worth the effort. ,

Activity

Old Perithia

At the far north of the island completely hidden from the sea is the large, almost abandoned village of Old Perithia. With seven churches, a good schoolhouse and numerous old houses old Perithia was clearly a thriving and prosperous town in years gone by. Through the years it was gradually abandoned and in a recent EU scheme it is slowly being restored as a living village. The scenery and architecture of the area is lovely and there are three good tavernas and refreshingly, little else. Many houses in Old Perithia are for sale, at very reasonably prices, by the local authority. However, there is a catch - you have to restore the house to its former glory!
Activity

The Achilleon Palace

The Achilleon is an impressive summer palace that was built in the early 1890's for the Empress Elizabeth of Austria (''Sissy'') who had a passion for Greece and Corfu in particular. A large imposing building about 5km south of Corfu town through the lovely village of Gastouri the Achilleon is worth the visit particularly for the lovely views from the palace grounds.
