Holiday Villas in Polis 2017 | Villa Plus

Holiday Villas in the Resort of Polis

The word Polis is Greek for town, and Polis is now the size of a small town, but the ambiance is still slow and sleepy, the perfect environment to forget your everyday life and leave work behind. Although it is less than an hours’ drive from the crowds and bustle of Paphos, it is a world away in atmosphere. The exceptional scenery make it an ideal base for walking, cycling and pony trekking, but if that is all too much like hard work, you can just laze by your pool and venture out in the cool of the evening for a few drinks at a local bar while you choose your restaurant for dinner – and you have quite a choice! You can opt for Italian food, as well as international and fusion dining and of course excellent Cypriot fare. This is not the place to come if you want loud music, late night dancing or foam parties, but for a really restful and rejuvenating holiday, it’s hard to beat.

Exploring Polis On Villa Holidays
Polis

The Akamas National Park is an area of outstanding natural beauty with only rudimentary roads but over fifty well-signposted nature trails. You can hike, cycle or ride through a timeless world of carob and olive trees, pine and juniper forests, streams and waterfalls, crags and peaks. If you want an easier option, you can book a jeep safari and let someone else worry about the driving while you concentrate on the scenery. Wildlife has flourished in the absence of humans, and there are 168 varieties of birds, 20 different reptiles, 16 species of butterfly and 12 different mammals to be found here.

Some of the best trails are on the road from Latchi near Aphrodite’s Bath. According to Greek mythology, Aphrodite, Goddess of Love was bathing in a small fern-fringed rock pool here, when Adonis stopped to drink the water while he was out hunting. They exchanged glances and were mutually smitten but as with all great love stories, it ended in tears, or in this case the death of Adonis, as Aphrodite was about to marry Hephaestus, the maker of the weapons for the Gods – not really someone to mess with. You can visit this natural grotto and waterfalls but to be honest, you may find it rather less than romantic with coachloads of tourists in the picture but the sea views are lovely, and the surrounding countryside magnificent.

For an amazing day out, head inland to explore the forests, villages, nature trails, waterfalls and impressive views of the Troodos Mountains. The countryside is rich in vineyards, atmospheric monasteries, myths and legends, not to mention nine UNESCO-listed churches and nearly 800 different plant species. If you think of Cyprus as sun, sea, sand and Keo beer, the mountains will give you a quite different view of the island. The vineyards, cool shady pine forests and orchards make a blissful contrast with all the heat and bustle of the coast. Explore one of the nature trails and beautiful scenery. Listen and all you will hear is birdsong and the burble of a mountain stream. You might see a woolly sheep or two – they roam wild here in the mountains.

You are just 2 miles away from the village of Latchi, still very much an active fishing community with a pretty harbour. Traditionally the local boatmen’s catch included natural sponges they would dive for and cut, and you can buy these as practical but beautiful souvenirs in the local shops. This is a great place for fresh, locally grown fruit and vegetables, but Latchi is famous for its outstanding fish and seafood. There are some top notch restaurants around the picturesque harbour, including traditional Cypriot food and contemporary international cuisine, but this is seafood heaven and we highly recommend the fish meze! There are also chic or traditional waterfront coffee shops and some excellent locally made ice cream to cool you down.

Cyprus is famous for its wines, and here is the north west, villages such as Drouseia, Ineia, Kathikas, Pano and Kato Arodes invite you to visit their windswept vineyards, and taste their produce. Don’t miss the wine made from the indigenous Xynisteri, a grape variety that produces some of the finest white wines of the island.
