Top Travel Tech

Technology is making travel easier everyday – from the apps that help you with the local lingo to rucksacks that can charge your phone on the move.

Next time you go on holiday, see of these handy apps and gadgets could make your break go a bit more smoothly!

Apps

HearPlanet

Calling itself the "world's largest audio-guide", this app features integrated maps and provides spoken-word descriptions of whatever locality you're in. With more than 300,000 locations covered worldwide, it uses geolocation to find recommend the attractions nearest to you, making it a handy little pal to have with you on short stops.

Foodspotting

Tell this app what you're hungry for, and it'll find you the nearest restaurant that serves it - in hundreds of cities worldwide. All the data on the app is crowd-sourced, and you can rate restaurants and share reviews with others. The layout is all very visual, with plenty of foodie photos, so you can quite literally see what looks good nearby!

Touchnote

Ever been disappointed at the selection of postcards on offer while you're on holiday? This app lets you turn photos you've taken into postcards, which are then printed out and posted anywhere in the world by Touchnote themselves, for the pretty reasonable fee of £1.49. You can also use it for personalised greetings cards.

Dcovery

Rather than being a travel guide app in itself, Dcovery gives you the tools to build your own guides to the places you visit. You can personalise your guides with your own photos, add reviews and write-ups that interest you, and there's a host of other handy features like local time and weather and opening times for popular attractions.

Google Translate

Handy for travellers who still need to brush up on the local lingo, Google Translate supports more than 60 languages and is packed with great features, including voice-to-text, Conversation Mode and Optical Character Recognition (for street signs, menus etc). You can also bookmark your favourite translations to view in offline mode.

Gadgets

Crosskase

Combine your storage and energy needs with this lightweight backpack, which features an integrated three-watt solar panel to convert sunlight into power and eight built-in charging adapters. Energy is stored in a 2200mAH battery that can charge a wide range of devices on the go. It's also fully waterproof, with dedicated iPod and iPad pockets and 25 litres of storage space.

Eye Scope Telephoto Lens

This detachable 8x zoom lens clips right onto your iPhone, lending its in-built camera an impressive field view of 246m. Ideal for photography enthusiasts who don't want to lug a load of heavy kit around on their travels, it comes with a tripod to aid stability while shooting, as well as a carry case and lens cloth.

Mushroom GreenZero Wall Travel Charger

Overcharging your devices can ruin their battery life over time, as well as being tough on the environment. This device simply cuts off the power to your device when it's fully charged, and is compatible with 30 pin iPhone cables as well as all USB cables. The giant green button is pretty cool, too.

Trakdot

Worried about arriving in Beijing to find your luggage has gone to Belize? Trakdot doesn't use GPS, but instead uses proprietary microelectronics and phone signals to tell you where it is and how long it's been in the air. It even sends a text message to its owner when it arrives safely at its destination.

Lifeproof cases

These heavy-duty cases for iPhones, iPads and Samsung Galaxy devices offer some serious protection, which can be a handy thing to have when you're on the move. These aren't just shock protectors - they make your smartphone waterproof, snowproof and dirtproof too. The nüüd series even offers screenless protection, allowing for direct touch.
