Villas Spanish

Without a doubt one of the best things about holidays in Spanish villas with Villa Plus is visiting Spain and trying the traditional food. Travel to one of our villas in the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca, Mallorca, Menorca and Lanzarote and enjoy the country's unique, delicious, regional dishes.

Food in Spain is practically a way of life. Families get together, friends unite or new 'buddies' are made when tables are pushed together at meal times. And often meals are arranged around the day's events. Tourists travelling to stay in Spanish villas might be surprised to find that the Spanish tend to eat late in the evening and families are often seen eating after 9pm. Sometimes restaurants can be seen heaving with family and friends after 11pm when it seems back home they would probably be eager to clear the tables and usher you out.

So - a useful bit of advice on holidays in Spanish villas would be to have a siesta late afternoon after you've had an exhausting time, stretched out on a golden beach caked in sun oil. That way you'll be up for enjoying the buzzing atmosphere of the restaurants late into the evening. You'll find children are generally welcomed in restaurants and some bars at night, that's if you can keep your toddler from nodding off into his bowl of Albondigas – meat balls in sauce!

Our Spanish villas have fully equipped kitchens and barbecues so that you can cater for yourself and enjoy dining al fresco on warm balmy evenings. Preparation of meals at Spain villas can take it out of you – after all you are supposed to be on holiday! Maybe some days you just want to go out and enjoy some excellent fish and meat dishes which most of Spain is famous for. Spanish cooking is often referred to as the food of fishermen and farmers. Mixed with long standing influences from the Moors and Arabs, Spain's distinctive cuisine brings together dishes in a class of their own.

It's a wonderful feeling at Spanish villas to wake up and have a leisurely breakfast on the terrace by your private pool, under clear blue skies, with the warmth of the morning sun on you. You can just picture it can't you? You'll always find a restaurant, café or bar open that will serve breakfast if you don't want to prepare your own. Breakfast is usually taken late in Spain and is very much a traditional European affair. A continental breakfast typically starts with a cup of fresh café con leche (coffee with milk) which can be quite strong. To follow: rolls, bread and jam, or sweet rolls called Bolos are sometimes on offer, as well as Magdalenas and hot lemon flavoured cupcakes.

A great way to get a taste of a wide variety of Spanish cuisine whilst on holidays in Spanish villas is to explore tapas bars. Meaning cover or lid, tapas came from the days when bar workers would place small appetisers on the bar for their patrons and cover them with wine glasses to ward off the flies.

Tapas are enjoyed with a chunk of bread, sometime toasted, and dipped in olive oil, or served with a dish of olives. It's great fun choosing a couple of tapas and having a glass of wine or beer, then moving on to another bar to taste more tapas. If you're not sure what to select it's always a good idea to see what everyone else is eating. Just make your selection by pointing to the tapas, if your Spanish is not too good. Tapas to tickle your tastebuds when out for the evening from Spanish villas: Calamares a la romana (deep fried squid rings); tortilla Espanol (potato omelette) and pincho moruno (kebab). All resorts have their local Spanish restaurants, a traditional atmosphere and are most welcome. For a light meal have some raciones which are tapas served up on bigger plates – it makes a romantic and filling meal for two.

Paella is a popular dish in Spain and a Sunday lunch favourite with the locals who gather at beach side restaurants to dive into this delicious dish. Various versions of paella can be found wherever you stay in Spanish villas, for example the Andalucian version of paella contains mussels, cockles, prawns and squid and is sometimes called 'arroz marinero'. Usually paella is a rice dish with seafood, meat and vegetables. Stay in one of our Spain holiday villas in Nerja, in the Costa del Sol, and you'll come across a great variety of Restaurants, Bodegas and Chiringuitos from which to choose. For lunch head for a Chiringuito situated on the beach front and indulge in a traditional 'Paella', washed down with some local wine.

Dishes to try in restaurants, when staying in a villa in Spain: squid cooked in its own ink and monkfish, unbelievably mouth watering! You'll find dishes served up in the most expensive restaurants can easily be found in simple little cafes. Our Spanish villas are never to far away from restaurants, cafes and bars.

With so many restaurants of all nationalities as well as Spanish, you will always find an enjoyable meal, whatever takes your fancy. Calpe in the Costa Blanca is famous for its fish restaurants running along the promenade and a fish platter of the day will guarantee some serious eating! Enjoy some lazy tapas in Pollenca, Mallorca, or you can find some excellent seafood restaurants and tapas bars in the marina of Alcudia in Mallorca. A wonderful way to start a meal in Menorca is with a basket of bread and a bowl of Alioli (garlic mayonnaise) – mayonnaise is said to have been born in Mahon. Without doubt the “Frutas del Mar” (Fruits of the Sea) are what Canarian cooking is all about and you'll find some delicious fish dishes when you explore restaurants, when on holiday staying in villas in Spain.

Hungry for Spain now? Travel out to one of our Spanish villas and get the taste for Spanish cuisine. Spain villas are all about discovering new delights!
