Each town in Menorca has a Patron Saint which they pay tribute to by holding a fiesta. To the locals the word 'fiesta' brings up pictures of immaculately groomed horses which are a major feature in the events of the town, on the other hand you might think Spanish villas – fiesta-fun time. From your villas to rent in Menorca, visit Ciudadela (Ciutadella) on the west coast, some 45 km from Mahon, the home of the first festival of the year and probably the biggest – San Juan - held between 20th and 24th June. People visit from all over Spain to watch the celebrations; sometimes TV crews film the event too. Stunning horses speed through the narrow streets and the squares fill with song and laughter; a huge party is held with music, dancing and fireworks and helped with the drinking of the local fiesta drink of ‘Pomada', the explosive mix of gin and lemon! As the evening progresses you will see large scale battles of people throwing hazelnuts at each other, supposedly a sign of love!
