Sporting Activities In Menorca

Menorca is a fantastic place for enjoying lazy afternoons on the beach or by the pool, but for anyone seeking something a little more active, the island also has a huge range of more adventurous activites.  In addition to the various watersport facilities, there are many other activities available for both adults and children, as participants or as spectators.|Well-prepared centres all around the island hire and give tuition in a range of watersports including windsurfing, scuba diving and sailing.  Hire your own sailing boat, with or without skipper, and navigate the clear, enticing waters.  Parascending is perhaps for the more adventurous but well worth the effort.|The islands' one and only golf course, in Son Parc, is well managed and, aside from beautifully kept greens, offers good restaurant facilities and wide open and covered terraces for spectators.|Tennis courts are also widely available and all have equipment for hire.  Horse riding, trotting races and equestrian shows are becoming increasingly popular, or try your hand at green bowls or cricket. The cricket club was built by and is expertly run by British ex-pats.  Play yourself or watch the locals play against visiting teams.|In some of the more popular resorts football matches are often organised between visitors and locals.
Watersports

Menorca is definitely the place to be for anyone wanting to experience watersports on their villa holiday! Professional centres with modern teaching techniques and equipment to hire make it all so easy, even for beginners. Menorca's prevalent winds and summers breezes provide perfect conditions for windsurfing or sailing and diving is also very popular with a great deal of sea life and underwaters caves to be explored!|Most main beach resorts have windsurf boards and small sailing dinghys but Fornells, on the North coast of the island, in particular, is home to some of the best windsurfing and sailing facilities in Europe.

Scuba Diving

With its underwater caves and coral encrusted rock formations, Menorca is recognised as one of the most spectacular diving locations in the Med. for scuba diving and snorkelling.  Dive schools located around the island provide daily excursions and equipment for visiting qualified divers.
For the beginner - now is your chance - the qualified instructors can have you scuba diving in less than 2 hours! Parascending is now made easy with modern techniques of launch and recovery from the boats' platform - there's no need to even get wet!  The not so adventurous are normally allowed, for a small fee, to ride along in the boat.
Some of the bigger, recognised centres are:

Horse Shows

There are many horse and pony riding centres around the island as well as a choice of spectacular equestrian shows which have now become a regular haunt for many of the islands' visitors.

The most popular horse show on the island is the Somni at the Son Martorellet Horse Farm, on the road from Ferreries to Cala Galdana. The Farm is dedicated to the breeding, care and training of the Menorcan breed horse and puts on regular performances and dressage displays. Visitors will also be able to look around the farm and stables, and facilities include a gift shop, a choice of places to eat and a childrens play area - www.sonmartorellet.com/en/index.php

Cricket Biniparell, close to the village of San Luis, has a cricket club with its own ground and club house. It was built by English residents who are rightly proud to be the only group to have purchased its own land and built its own Cricket Club in all of Spain! It can be found by driving along the narrow, country lane leading to the small hamlet of Llucmessanes.  There are regular fixtures throughout the summer and visitors are always welcome and are often asked to make up the numbers for a club game!
Green Bowls The Menorca Bowls club is located in Salgar.  There are 7 outdoor greens, all of which are carpeted.  There are regular tournaments, the majority of members being English residents.  Equipment may be hired from the club office and tuition is also available.
Tennis There are tennis courts in almost every resort, all of which hire out equipment. The plexicushion court at the Son Parc Golf Club is particularly popular, but try the facilities at Santo Tomas, Calan Porter, Calan Forcat, Arenal Den Castell, Calan Bosch or Salgar.
