Not to be missed on a Kefalonia villa holiday is a visit to the spectacular caves at Melissani and Drogoratti, attracting thousands of holiday visitors every year. The Melissani cave is located in the Karavomilos area near Sami. This unique cave, discovered byYiannis Petrohilos in 1951, will take your breath away – it includes a beautiful lake, as clear as crystal, 22 metres below the ground, about 30 metres deep. A boat will take you on a trip to discover stalactites and stalagmites. The other cave – Drogarati, close to Sami was discovered 300 years ago when an earthquake created an entrance to it. This cave was used by the community of Halliotata – since 1963 the public can go and gawp in amazement at it.
